Week 1 (August 23-29)

The E/V Nautilus sounds like an interesting project that is happening.  Students in the Geology class get to interact with the creation and help to develop models and projects from the gathered information.  The E/V Nautilus will be able to assist scientists and geologists with helpful hints about the seafloor spreading and various other actions going on in the Mediterranean sea.  Adam Sharke is one of the lucky graduate students who are apart of the project. He will be abroad the large ship with Ballards team.  More information will be given, as the research continues.

Mount Sinabung, in the north of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia erupted for the first time in over 400 years!! Many of the natives had to evacuate the area, and left their homes.  The residents knew the eruption was happening overnight, so many were able to beat the evacuation.  Not many were killed or hurt.  But children and women were featured wearing masks.  The residents are staying in make-shift shelters, waiting it out.  Since this is the first eruption in quite sometime, the patterns are unknown.  Residents are being cautious, but things seem to be alright.
