Week 15 (November 29- December 5)

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/energy/7301640.html

There is a scare due to "Hydraulic fracturing", it is said to take away people's jobs, and threaten the economy.  The energy security may be harmed by the use of this "hydraulic fracturing", but it is hard to determine.  Banning the act is a possibility at the time, but is not certain yet.  The goal at this point is to acquire the most out of the process, and not harm people or the environment.  The fracturing is getting a lot of attention, but the importance is lacking in the media.  Natural gas would be formed artificially due to fluids under high pressure underground.  Contamination of water supplies are possible, and gases could escape.  More research will be done...

Tropical reefs provide food, and shelter for more than a fourth of all marine life, and now it may be at risk.  Due to the recent growth of change in the world's oceans-- bad things can only be predicted for the marine life.  The biodiversity of the oceans is not doing so hot, and may cause some marine life to no longer function properly.  There is an increase in acidification, and may cause not only ocean warming, but limitation of habitats to certain marine life.  If emissions of acidity continues to increase, acidity will increase 150 percent!  The eco life cycle will need to be examined to properly determine the risks of the acidity in the ocean.  Some creatures will be able to adapt, but not all will.

Week 14 (November 22-28)

http://www.niwa.co.nz/our-science/atmosphere/news/all/scientists-probe-beneath-antarctic-ice-shelves

The first ever year-around research project done under the ice, in the Antarctica.  This will help to relate the ice, to the ocean to activities done underwater to make the sea-level rise.  Research is being done to see if warmer water is reaching the area, causing the sea level change.  The ice melts when the water is warmer, which makes sense, but research needs to be done specifically for this area.  More details to come...

Week 11 (November1-7)

For years, scientists wondered why the B-ring of Saturn looked like an old vinyl record, but have realized it is due to the density of the rings.  The more dense region on the ring is the lighter part-- which may explain the formation of other galaxies and planetary systems.  People used to think the grooves in the ring were due to some molecular or gravitational force, and never thought about the fact of natural occurrences.  Research had not been done thoroughly on the ring as what could have been done, and that is why conclusions could not be reached.  Now that conclusions have been reached, it seems to make more sense for the creation of the rings, and the record-like look.

The globular clusters have been a mystery for years, and how they came about.  Research is being done as to how their existence occurred.  Dark matter was always a theory as to why the creation of some of these clusters were possible.  As research is being done, it is being seen that there is not dark matter found near where some clusters were formed.  So what explains their formation?  Researchers think that maybe that there were "shocked and compressed gas and dust in particular areas, creating agglomerations of thousands of stars in particular areas".  This could be a plausible answer to the question, but maybe dark matter did help to form some clusters.  KNowing how galaxies and clusters form, help to understand the formation of our complete solar system.

Week 10 (October 25-31)

Pictures over the Egyptian Sahara shows that there used to be a large lake, larger than Lake Erie.  Around 80,000 years ago, it seemed to have completely became dry.  Desert winds and sand have eroded much of the area, and is hard to find such geological features in the area very easily.  In the 1980's, researchers reportedly found fossils of fish in the desert, so now it makes sense that there have been several large, non-existant lakes in the area.  The annual floods of the Nile is where most Egyptians look for water.

Before, and during the time of dinosaurs, mammals were never very large.  But it seems, that as the dinosaurs died out, the mammals size kept getting larger and larger as time went on.  Fossils had to be looked at and compared for different time periods, in order to determine why the mammals sizes kept getting larger.  Studies relating location, tooth size, hooves, body mass, etc. went into account to determine why and how the mammals kept growing.  It is shown that larger animals occur during ice age, because it is easier for them to survive in the cool temperatures.

Researchers had trouble believing where the Earth got it's many water suppliers from, and even looked to aliens for the answer... geologists luckily came to the rescue.  Geologists researched the meteorites that hit the planet, and planets similar to Earth, and found that "oceans were sloshing around on Earth by as early as 4.4 billion years ago".  This news allows researchers to better understand the creation of the many water supplies on Earth, and how they got there.  Due to climate, and time... that is the reason why planets similar to Earth are making themselves known.

Week 9 (October 18-24)

The government is not allowing the state of Arizona to know that they're having water contamination problems, instead science has to inform residence.  Ground water and surface water are apart of "one large continuum of water" says an associate of the Water Science Center in Tucson.  The upper aquifer may need to be pumped in the near future, to reduce contamination, if the rivers and streams are still being depleted in the future.
